⚠️ 10 Mistakes JAMB Candidates Make Every Year

By JAMBPrep NG • Updated November 2026 • 5 minutes read

Every year, thousands of smart students fail JAMB not because they are dull, but because they repeat the same mistakes. If you avoid these 10 mistakes, you have already passed half of JAMB.

1. Reading Without The Syllabus

Mistake: You read textbook cover to cover but JAMB only asks from about 20 topics per subject.
Fix: Download the syllabus and tick each topic as you finish it. Use our Syllabus page to track your progress.

2. No CBT Practice

Mistake: You know the answer on paper, but you are slow on computer and you panic when the timer starts.
Fix: Practise on our free CBT Quiz at least 3 times per week. 90 questions, 1 hour, score out of 400 - just like real JAMB.

3. Ignoring English

Mistake: You focus on Maths and Science and ignore English, but English is compulsory and carries the highest mark.
Fix: Study English every single day. Comprehension, Lexis, and Oral English. Read one passage daily.

4. Guessing Without Elimination

Mistake: You guess randomly between 4 options.
Fix: Always remove 2 obviously wrong options first, then guess between the remaining 2. This doubles your chance of getting it right.

5. Spending Too Long On One Question

Mistake: You spend 5 minutes on one hard Maths question and you don't have time for 10 easy ones.
Fix: If a question is hard, skip it and come back. Use the question palette in our quiz to jump between questions.

6. Not Reviewing Mistakes

Mistake: You do a quiz, check your score, and move on.
Fix: After every quiz, scroll down and read the Review + Explanation section. That is where real learning happens.

7. Waiting Till Last Month

Mistake: You say "I will start next month" and then you try to cram everything in 2 weeks.
Fix: Start now. 30 minutes daily for 2 months beats 10 hours in one day. Consistency wins.

8. Using Wrong Subject Combination

Mistake: You choose subjects your friend chose, but they are not correct for your course.
Fix: Check your course requirement on the JAMB brochure before choosing subjects. For example, Medicine needs English, Physics, Chemistry, Biology. Law needs English, Literature, Government, CRS/IRS.

9. Not Timing Yourself

Mistake: You practise questions without a timer, then you run out of time in the real exam.
Fix: Always practise with 1 hour for 90 questions. Train for speed as well as accuracy.

10. No Revision Plan

Mistake: You read once and forget everything after one week.
Fix: Use the syllabus to track what you have covered. Every Sunday, review all your mistakes from the week.
